SPLIT LOCATION

Split is a city in Croatia, located in region of Central Dalmatia. It is located on Marjan peninsula, surrounded by mountain Mosor (north), Kozjak (northwest), hill Perun (east). Split's peninsula is surrounded by islands Hvar, Brac, Solta and Ciovo. City of Split is located on area of 79 km2.

It is the largest city in Dalmatia and its administrative, cultural, historical and traffic center. Split is also second largest town in Croatia. Distances: Dubrovnik – 216 km, Karlovac – 309 km, Osijek – 660 km, Pula – 503 km, Zadar – 169 km, Zagreb – 365 km, Sibenik – 97 km, Rome – 1060 km, Paris – 1653 km, Budapest – 665 km, Madrid – 2353 km, Sarajevo – 242 km, Prague – 999 km...

You can get to city of Split by airplane to Airport Split which is located 20 km far from Split and 6 km far from Trogir, at the exit of Kastela. Airport Split is connected with Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Paris, Zurich, Frankfurt, Rome, London, Munich, Budapest, Vienna, Nantes, Helsinki, Oslo, Ljubljana, Bristol, Geneva, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Dresden and many other European centers. From airport Split you can continue you travel by buses, cars, boat rentals, ferries, water taxi and group water transfers.

You can rent a caror rent a boat, but also use taxi on land and speed boat taxi services on the sea for water activities like cruises and trips. If you are coming by car or bus, best way is to take highway A1 Zagreb-Split and exit in Dugopolje, which is located 12 km north of Split. You can also use main coastal road within the sea and visit many beautiful Croatian towns and places. You can come to Split by train.

Train station is located within the ferry port and bus station in Split, near main Split's promenade Riva, at the Coast of Duke Domagoj promenade.

SPLIT INHABITANTS AND SETTLEMENTS

City of Split has around 190 000 inhabitants, but around 408 000 inhabitants in wider metropolitan area. Around 95% of inhabitants are Croats and others are Bosnians, Serbs, Slovenes, Montenegrins and other.

City of Split also includes settlements Kamen, Stobrec, Donje Sitno, Gornje Sitno Zrnovnica, Slatine and Srinjine. Urban districts of city of Split: Bacvice, Bol, Firule, Gripe, Kocunar, Lokve, Mejasi, Meje, Ravne njive, Skalice, Sucidar, Sine, Veli Varos, Znjan, Visoka, Neslanovac, Mertojak, Blatine, Brda, Grad, Kman, Lovret, Lucac-Manus, Pazdigrad, Plokite, Sirobuja, Pujanke, Smokovik, Split 3 (Smrdecac), Spinut, Trstenik.

Inhabitants of Split are mostly directed to trade, fishing, textile and food industry, tourism...

SPLIT CLIMATE

Climate in area of city of Split is Mediterranean with average year temperature 15,7°C. It has around 2700 sunny hours per year, hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters. Flora in Split is mostly oriented on hill Marjan and it consists maquis, Aleppo pine, palms and other Mediterranean vegetation. Summer sea temperature can be up to 24-25°C. Winds that blow in Split are mistral, south wind and bora. Mistral is refreshing wind that brings nice weather. South wind called JUGO is warm and moist south-east wind. It mostly blows from September till April and brings bad biometeorological conditions. Bora is very strong north-east wind. Bora blows from mainland to the sea. It can be very strong and unpleasant. Highest bora speed was recoreded on Maslinica bridge in 1998. and it reached 248 km/h.

SPLIT HISTORY

Area of Split has been inhabitated since Prehistory. In the caves of mountains Kozjak and Mosor were found archeological remains of human activities. Remains of first settlements have been found in area of Gripe. It has been inhabitated before emperor Diocletian.

It is believed that Illyrians lived in area of Split too. Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284.-305. He introduced new system Tetrarchy, simultaneous rule of four rulers. His original name was Diokles, he was Illyrian, persecutor of Christians and the only Roman emperor who departed without compulsion. Diocletian wanted to spend his retirement days in Split's Diocletian's palace, which he built in 4th century, from 295.-305.

In 480. in Diocletian's palace, last Roman emperor Julius Nepus was poisoned. In 7th century Diocletian's palace was more and more inhabitated and Split started to develope outside of the walls of the palace.

Split was Christianized and emperor's mausoleum became a church, actually today's cathedral of St. Duje. Till the 15th century town Split was independent commune with its own Statute and Council. From the 15th till the end of 18th century Dalmatia was under the Venetians.

From the 1805.-1813. it was under the France and Napoleon and then it belonged to Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. In 1912. began the construction of the railway Zagreb-Split. Dalmatia was merged with Croatia after World War I. Split has been developing since then and it became administrative, cultural, historical and economy center of Dalmatia.

In 1925. railway Zagreb-Split was finished. In 1991. Croatia was attacked by the army of Serbia. Split was bombed in September by the torpedo boats by JRM and in November from the sea. In 1991. Split was part of independent Republic of Croatia. Since 1993. Split has been the center of Split-Dalmatian region.

SPLIT TOURISM

Split offers accommodation in many hotels, apartments, private houses and rooms. Most known hotels in Split are Atrium, Jadran, As, Slavija, Radisson Blu Resort, Park, Marmont, Le Meridien Lav, President, Medena, Globo and many more. Many private owners offer accommodation in their houses, apartments and rooms.

There are many apartments that you can book in the center of Split, in Diocletian's palace. City of Split is famous touristic destination because of its historical and cultural heritage and natural beauties.

There are many historical monuments and buildings that are very attractive and tell its story. Split also has beautiful beaches and Park-woods Marjan which is very popular for recreation and sport activities, such as walks, jogging, bicycle riding, swimming and sunbathing.

Most famous Split's beaches are: Kastelet (sand beach), Kasjuni (sand and rocky beach), Ovcice, Bacvice (sand beach), Znjan (pebble beach)... Bacvice is most known and most famous Split's beach.

It is sand beach located 1 km far from the center of Split. It is famous destination for picigin lovers. Picigin is a game played with a small ball which has to stay in the air.

Bacvice has many coffee bars and restaurants nearby. You can also rent deck chairs and parasols. Bay Bacvice is 600 m long.

Diocletian's Palace was built in 3rd and 4th century by emperor Diocletian for his retirement. Diocletian's palace had mausoleum where the emperor was buried, but today it is the Split's cathedral of St. Duje, who is the protector of Split. After the emperors death, it was still inhabitated, mostly by members of the Roman royal families.

Later, in 6th century, when Salona was destroyed, it became home for many Salona's refugees. Today, it is the center of the Old town in Split. Most known parts of Diocletian's palace are: Cathedral of St. Duje with mausoleum, Golden Gate, Iron Gate, Peristil, Temple of Venus, Silver Gate, Brass Gate, Diocletian's apartment, Portiron...

Temple of Jupiter was built during the construction of Diocletian's palace. In front of the temple is one of two sfings brought from Egypt by order of emperor Diocletian. Temple of Jupiter is located west of Peristil inside of the Diocletian's palace.

During the Middle Ages, the temple became baptistery. Cathedral of St. Duje is dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. It has been built in Diocletian's palace where used to be emperor's mausoleum.

First Split's Archbishop was Ivan Ravenjanin. Wooden gates of the cathedral were built by Andrija Buvina. Bell-tower was probably built in 13th century. Fort Gripe was built in 17th century to defend Split from the Turks.

It is located east of the center of town. After Split developed outside of the Diocletian's palace walls, inhabitants needed protection of Turks, so many similar forts were built to defend part of Split that is outside of the walls of the palace.

Today Fort Gripe is Croatian Maritime Museum. Park-woods Marjan is a hill located on west side of Split's peninsula. Highest peak of Marjan is Telegrin. Marjan is 3,5 km long and 1,5 km wide on widest point.

It has area of 340 ha. There are many desert habitats, such as St. Jere. St. Jere used to be pasture, but in 19th and 20th century it was wooded with pine trees. Churches on Marjan are: Church of St. Nicholas, Church of St. Jere, Church Betlem (14th century), Church of St. Benedictine...

Today, Marjan is favorite recreational position for Split's inhabitants. In the bottom of Marjan are many beaches where you can enjoy in swimming and sunbathing during the summer: Zvoncac, Jezinac, Kasjuni, Na Obojenu, Bene... Riva is most known waterfront in Croatia.

It is 1700 years old. Many sports, social, fun and church events are kept on Riva. It is 250 m long and it is very attractive for walks within the sea. Monument Gregory of Nin was built by sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Gregory of Nin was most known Nin's bishop.

When Tomislav was declared as king in 925., Gregory of Nin has the highest position in Croatian Church. Gregory of Nin was the main proponent of folk Glagolitic alphabet and Old Slavic language.

There are three statues of Gregory of Nin in Croatia. One is in town Nin, other in town Varazdin and third in Split. It is believed that touching its tumb brings happiness and wishes come true. Prokurative is central square in Split. Officially it is known as the Suqare of the Republic.

It is located west of the walls of Diocletian's palace. On Prokurative has been kept Festival of Popular Music for the last 50 years and many other events.

SPLIT ACTIVITIES AND NIGHT LIFE

Split has many coffee bars, night clubs and cocktail bars in which you can spend all those unforgettable nights. Most famous night clubs are: Hemingway, Jungle, Vanilla, Bacvice, Tropic Club Ekvador, Ohara, Quasimodo...

Famous coffee bars within the beach and in the center of Split are: Zbirac at Bacvice beach, Ovcice at Ovcice beach, Obojena svjetlost at Obojena beach, Teraca Bamba at Meje, F-cafe on Riva, Bobis cafe, ST-Riva...

In Split you can enjoy in many sport activities like mini golf, tennis, football, volleyball, handball, bowling, and also water activities like sailing, cruising, surfing, diving, water skiing, pedals and many more.

You can enjoy in outdoor sports or go to some of the sports centers in Split that offer different interior activities like gym, sauna, pilates, spa... Park-woods Marjan is ideal for jogging, walking, swimming and sunbathing.

For excursions to nearby historical locations and visiting bays and beaches around Split, you can use water taxi with speed boats and water transfers or rent a boat.

You can enjoy in fresh air and beautiful nature that it offers. There are also coffee bars nearby where you can look at the sea and enjoy in your morning coffee.

There are many activities and events kept during the whole year, but mostly in summer months in Split: Festival of Popular Music in July, folk nights, Split's summer from the middle of July till the middle of August, Diocletian's guard shift from June till September, Festival of Mediterranean Films in June, many concerts and exhibitions...
