SUTIVAN LOCATION

Sutivan is located on north-west coast of island Brac, in Croatian region of Central Dalmatia. Sutivan is located on area of 22 km2. Sutivan is located accross the city of Split. Sutivan is located 59 km far from Makarska, 27 km far from Split, 182 km far from Zadar and 435 km far from Zagreb.

You can get to Sutivan by ferry line Split-Supetar or by airplane in Airport Split od Airport Brac during the summer months. You can also come to Supetar using boat rentals or water taxi transportations with speed boat. There are also organized group water transfers which will take you to Sutivan or some different location, where you can enjoy in water activities like cruises. That kind of transportation is ideal for one-day trips around the island.

SUTIVAN INHABITANTS AND SETTLEMENTS

Sutivan is one of the Croatian smallest Municipalities. It is the only settlement in Sutivan's Municipality. Sutivan has around 720 inhabitants. Inhabitants are mostly directed to agriculture, olive and vine growing, fishing and tourism.

In 1890. Sutivan had around 1900 inhabitants, but most of them moved during the grapevine deseases.

SUTIVAN HISTORY

Name Sutivan became official by the name of Early Christian basilica sanctus Johannes. Sutivan's history started in a part called Bunte and around the church of St. John from 6th century. Most of the Brac's inhabitants call Sutivan Stivan which was the original name at the time of Sutivan's foundation.

Earliest foundings of first inhabitants of this area come from Illyrian and Roman times. Sutivan used to be very much connected with city of Split and it had direct ferry line with Split during the 11th century, when Split's nobelmen had properties in Sutivan.

Sutivan started to develop for real after 1444. when Brac's inhabitants started to found settlements on the coast of island Brac and move from inland to the coast. Oldest house is house complex Ilic of nobelman Jakov Natalis. First Sutivan's Pastor was don Frane Ivanovic, in 16th century. Sutivan has around 200 inhabitants then.

In 18th century number of inhabitants was around 700. Sutivan was on the highest point in economy in 1890. when it had 1875 inhabitants and used to produce around 3500 hl of oil and 9300 hl of wine. Until the 1894. Brac's vine groves were attacked by grapevine diseases and made many of the inhbitants to emigrate.

In 1935. in Sutivan was founded Cooperative for electrification and health, but the works were stopped because of the World War II. In 1952. works started again and in 2 years time, Brac's inhabitants gave all funds to to place into the sea first electrical high-voltage cable on the Adriatic coast.

SUTIVAN TOURISM

Tourism in Sutivan started in 1927. when first hotel „Vesna“ was built by Ivan Grubsic. Todays main beach in Sutivan Bunta used to be called Czech beach. Today Sutivan has around 1700 registered beds. Hungarian tourists are most often visitors of Sutivan.

SUTIVAN ACTIVITIES AND NIGHT LIFE

In Sutivan you can enjoy in sports activities such as tennis, volleyball, football, basketball, surfing, diving, cruising, jogging, bicycle riding and many more water activities. You can also try some of the best traditional specialities in many restaurants, taverns, coffee bars and pizzerias.

Excursions organized by water transfers from Sutivan are a great way to fulfill your days by visiting towns Bol and its famous beach Zlatni Rat, Supetar, Split, Trogir, island Hvar and its historical heritage. If you wish to be in private and explore beautiful locations nearby island Brac and enjoy in water activities, you should rent a boat or use water taxi to take you to wanted locations by speed boat.

You can also visit Vidova gora – highest peak on island Brac and highest peak of all Croatian islands (778 m). Night life is active in many night and disco clubs in Sutivan and other towns on island Brac. Also many concerts and fisherman's nights are kept during the summer months.
