Grohote is the biggest and the oldest settlement on the island of Solta that offers a peaceful vacation to its guests.

The Early Christian Basilica of St. Stjepan can be seen in Grohote. It was damaged during a pirate attack by the pirates from Omis.
Near Grohote there is an old Christian cemetery with tombstones and sarcophagus.
The Night of the Pirates in Maslinica is an event that is being held since 2010. The Night of the Pirates is accompanied by live music and various exhibitions of Solta’s artists.
The “Tugging of Mrduja” is a traditional event held every year on the last weekend of July. Between the islands of Solta and Brac is located a small island called Mrduja. The competitors from both of the islands gather their boats around Mrduja, tie ropes around it trying to “tug” the island while rowing over to their side. When the competition is over, a big feast is prepared later in the day to celebrate the event and award the winners.
Every year the number of boats participating in this event increases as well as the number of spectators coming to cheer them on.

Grohote (island Solta) - Location and Climate
Grohote is a settlement on the island of Solta. It is located in the very center of the island and belongs to the Solta Municipality and the Split-Dalmatia County. Grohote has a population of about 425 permanent residents who are mostly engaged in farming and sailing and since recently in limestone production.
The island of Solta is easily reached as the port Rogac is connected by fast boat and ferry lines to Split. It takes one hour by ferry and half an hour by catamaran to get to Split from Rogac.
Solta can also be reached from Split with a private boat transfer. Group or private boat excursions can be arranged for a tour of the neighboring island of Hvar and Brac. Boat rental services are available in Solta.
A daily catamaran line runs from Split to Rogac and on Fridays and Sundays another one to Stomorska.
Rogac is well connected to the other places on the island by the local bus lines.
During the summer season the Split Airport is connected to almost every European country directly or via Zagreb. The Split Airport is located 25 km from the port of Split and from there you can take the bus to the port or get a cab or a car rental.
The bus terminal of Split is located adjacent to Split’s main ferry port and is extremely well connected by bus lines to the majority of cities in Croatia and Europe.
The Train Terminal Split is also located by the port.

Grohote (island Solta) - History
Old Romans described island Solta as beautiful island with rich flora and animal life. Grohote was first time mentioned in written documents in 1811., but island Solta has been inhabited since Roman times. It used to be called Olyntha and Osolenta.
The settlement of Grohote has been established during the Antique age which is shown by the many archaeological findings belonging to that period. Grohote has been first mentioned in 1370 as Grocotte. Besides the parish church built in the period from 1914 to 1917 there are also the ruins of an early Christian Basilica dedicated to the martyr St. Stjepan.
